Course content
The main forms of quantitative data collection are presented, such as use of questionnaires and surveys, and there is also focus on the use of secondary data sources (official statistics, existing maps and images). Further, the course provides a practical introduction to processing, analysis and presentation of geographic data, using statistical program packages (SPSS) and geographic information systems (ArcGIS). Descriptive statistics, different analytical techniques, selection of methods for quantitative geographical research, and graphical presentation in the form of thematic maps and graphs are all covered. The course also covers the use of aerial photographs and satellite images. Through practical exercises students gain insight into the possibilities and limitations of different quantitative techniques, and also map and image analysis.
Learning outcome
The aim is to provide a broad overview of quantitative methods and the use of maps and images in geographic information systems (GIS).
Learning methods and activities
16 hours lectures, 14 hours practical exercises. Compulsory activity: Approved practical exercises. Both of the exams must be handed in and graded to E or better in order to pass the course.
