About

About the course

Course content

A primary theme is the interplay between social and cultural globalisation processes, places, regions and people. Central issues are: 1) how places are simultaneously a part of the global and the local, 2) why and how places continue to have meaning, and 3) how places and people are mutually constituted. The course provides increased insight into concepts such as difference, identity, meaning, representations and social practice, as well as empirical-oriented research objectives linked to these. For example, the significance of class, gender, sexuality, rurality, urbanity, race, and ethnicity are highlighted. The lectures are research based, and the main focus varies from year to year, depending upon the Department’s current research activities. The course is primarily oriented towards the Western world.
During the course students write a paper, copies of which are distributed to other students and course tutor(s) and are presented at seminars. The paper and presentation must be approved before the home exam and oral exam can be taken. The home exam is graded, and this can be adjusted following the oral exam.

The course provides a deeper insight into the relation between global and local/regional processes of change using central theories and concepts in social and cultural geography.
