Course content
The course provides an introduction to the field of game studies based on lectures, seminars and group assignments. The lectures will focus on the fundamentals of game analysis; elements crucial to the aesthetic, cultural and technological understanding of games; theoretical and methodological perspectives relevant to game studies research, as well as issues related to the social and cultural dimensions of gaming. The subject is designed for students from the Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, but is also available to students enrolled in the bachelor programmes Film Studies, Media Production, Media Studies, Drama, Theatre or Music Technology as part of their free credits (”frie emner”).
Learning outcome
This course provides students with basic insights into core issues relating to the characteristics and aesthetics of computer and video games; their relation to other audiovisual expressions; the technology of pc and video games, and gaming as cultural practice.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and seminars.
Course requirements:
Seminar participation and a joint written project report.
Assessment:
A 4 hour written exam, graded A-F.
Students are required to keep updated on messages from the department or the academic instructor at It's learning and Innsida, as well as at course pages on the web or bulletin boards.
