Course content

This course studies the body and movement in contemporary cultural and social context. The subject draws mainly on topics from sociology of health and illness and from sociology of the body. Examples of themes are bodily experiences and relationalities, the social orderings of bodies, and conceptualizations of movement. A team based fieldwork assignment is central in the subject.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The student shall know and recognize:

  • how cultural and social norms and values influence bodily experiences and body relations, movement patterns and habitus.
  • how social development and changes influence and contribute to new aeras of knowledge in physiotherapy practice, and how these are incorporated into physiotherapy practice.
  • how to apply ethonographic research methods to aquire new knowledge about the body and movement.

 

Skills:

The student shall be able to:

  • apply theories about the body and movement in its contemporary cultural and social context into practical physiotherapy reasoning.
  • implement relevant elements of ethnographic research observation and interview into practical physiotherapy reasoning.
  • apply emerging perspectives from relevant social sciences into practical physiotherapy reasoning.

 

General competence:

The student shall be competent in:

  • recogninzzing relationships between social and cultural influences and body expressions and movement patterns.
  • facilitating an open communication reflecting on everyday social life, and its influence on the body and movement.
  • recognizing when and how knowledge from the social sciences are adequate in practical physiotherapy reasoning.

Examination

The exam consists of two parts:

  • Individual 4 hour written school exam, with only ordinary norwegian-english dictionary as an allowed examination support material. This part of the examination counts for 50 % of the grade.
  • Written field report, which is a group work. The report has to be written according to given guidelines. This part of the examination counts for 50 % of the grade.

Postponed exam will be arranged for students who have failed or have legitimate absence. It is only required to take the part of the examination you don`t have a valid result.

 

It is possible to appeal about a grade for each partial examination.

 

Compulsary assignment

This course`s compulsory assignment is arranged as teamwork assingments and consist of three (3) parts;

  1. Preparation of the fieldwork
  2. Performing the fieldwork
  3. Oral presentation of the fieldwork.

Detailed guidelines and schedule for the compulsory assignment will be provided.

 

All parts of the compulsory assignment have to be approved in order to take the exam.

 

Compulsory attendance

This course has 10 hours of compulsory activities. Compulsory activities that require attendance is marked in the schedule. Students who have more than 20 % (two hours) absence from the compulsory activities will not be allowed to take the exam.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Fysioterapi (HSGFTB)

Required previous knowledge

This course is submitted to admission requirements. Attendance is restricted to graduate students at the BA program in physiotherapy at NTNU, and to graduate students at cooperative physiotherapy educations.

 

The required prerequisite knowledge is passed HFYS2001, HFYS2002, HFYS203P, HFYS204P and HFYS2004.
