Course content
The subject concerns the rise of nationalism, the formation of the nation-state, and nation building from an international perspective. The Norwegian case is given a thorough presentation. The establishment of a Norwegian nation-state is analyzed through an international comparative perspective, where a number of other nation-building processes are related to the Norwegian experience. Important theories and concepts are discussed, and various forms of nationalism are presented.
Learning outcome
The subject provides students with an understanding of the political and social trends that laid the foundations for the new Norwegian state of 1814 and the dissolution of the Norwegian-Swedish union in 1905.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures. Every student must also write one approved essay.
