About

About the course

Course content

The course gives an introduction to important and relevant discussions on research ethics and the theory of science today. Both practical as well as theoretical questions on the possible connection between belonging to a certain scientific paradigm and the choice of method are addressed. Different phases of a research project, from the choice of problem to be addressed, to protection of research participants and communication of the research results, are all subjects in the course in order to make the students conscious of how ethics, methods and design are closely connected in the concept "good research". The teaching will take place partly as lectures and partly as teacher-assisted student papers based on group discussions. For the exam the student shall write an essay within a self-chosen subject within the philosophy of science. The essay should be based on a self-chosen curriculum of 150 pages.

Learning outcome

At the end of this course, the students should know about different theories of science and knowledge production, and on the relation between natural and social sciences. They should be able to relate concrete challenges in their own work - such as the choice of methodological approach on the master degree - to a historical and philosophical context. Further, the students should have acquired an ability for ethical reflection, which make them competent to evaluate the relation between ethics and design during the whole research process.
