About the course

Course content

This course will explore theory and research on contemporary conceptions of health differences, body, construction of deviance and normality, and technology in health.

Learning outcome

The student has a basic knowledge about sociolocal contribution to the understanding of health and illness. The student has developed a sufficient, critical understanding of the scientific basis of health professions and how these affect and are affected by social structures and institutions. The student applies her/his scientific qualifications in a sufficient manner when writing on the chosen topic.

Learning methods and activities

Teaching methods and activities: Lectures, student based assignments and group discussions.
Form of assessment: Term paper with individually chosen topic. The topic must be approved by the supervisor. The term paper must be about 15 pages long (12 point New Times Roman, 1.5 line space).

Compulsory assignments

  • Approved subject and individual reading list within nov 1st/april 15th

Required previous knowledge

Bachelor or the equivalent of the Health Sciences or Social Studies.

Course materials

The reading list consists of 600-800 pages, of which 250 pages are selected individually. The selected texts must be approved by the supervisor before the term paper can be submitted.
