About the course

Course content

Course description and objectives:The Master's thesis at the faculty of medicine must be clinically oriented. It must be scientifically structured and be founded in valid theory and literature within the topics at hand. The thesis should be oriented towards patient groups or the arena where patient health services are provided. Research focus areas may be assessment of mechanisms and causes, methods, treatments and interventions or classification and categorization of patient groups. Descriptive studies from health care practice or clinics as well as communication problems may in some cases also form the basis of the thesis. The research must however comprise elements of originality and independence. The candidate must choose a topic for the thesis and present a detailed protocol for approval by the tutor before the work on the thesis commences. The candidate applies to the Faculty of Medicine for approval of the research protocol and appointment of tutor, which must be chosen among the scientific faculty staff. It is encouraged to complete relevant methodological courses early on in the masters program. The preferred format of the thesis is a scientific article, but a monograph may also be accepted. The candidate must, in both cases, demonstrate a somewhat broader theoretical understanding of the methodological approaches to the chosen topic. A detailed guideline for the thesis is provided at the faculty's website.
