About the course

Course content

The course will focus on development of sport, it's functions and oppertunities as a imoportante national and global institution in the society. Main topics are the role of sport in the contect of health, leisure, social exclusion and inclision, professionalism, economy, culture and media. The subject will actualize sentral social dimentions of disparity as gender, class, ethnicity, sexuality etc. The different topics will be understood in light of socological theory and perspectives.

Learning outcome

The aim of the course is to give the students a fundamental introduction in to sport sociological perspectives, concepts and ways of analyzing the field of sport.

Learning methods and activities

Throughout the semester there are the equivalent of 4 hours of lectures and 2 hours of group discussion per week. There is a compulsory term paper based on a subject given in the lectures. The paper must be approved to be able to take the written exam. The paper can be written individually or in groups of 2-3 students. Form of assessment is a 5 hours written exam.
Admission to the course is restricted. All students must register in STUDWEB within 1 June (autumn semester) and 1 December (spring semester) if they want to take a course with restricted admission. This procedure must also be followed by students admitted to a programme of study where the course is obligatory. Students admitted to the particular programme of study will be given priority.
