About

About the course

Course content

The course presents an introduction to basic concepts and models in chemistry; structure of atoms, molecules, and crystalline matter (electron configuration and bonding theory); the periodic table of the elements; stoichiometry, chemical formulae, and reaction equations; properties of gases, liquids, and solutions; chemical equilibrium; acids, bases and salts; basic chemical thermodynamics (thermochemistry and free energy); electrochemistry (electrolytes, reduction and oxidation, electrochemical cells, and electrolysis), basic organic chemistry and nuclear chemistry.

Learning outcome

The aim of the course is twofold: One is to provide students with basic knowledge and the practical skills that are required for further studies in chemistry or biology. The other is to provide some understanding of the significance of chemistry for human life and health.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures (6 hours per week), exercises (2 hours per week), laboratory work (ca. 7 hours per week for 10 weeks). 6 of 10 excercises have to be passed. Required for final exam: Approved exercises and laboratory course. Final examination: 5 hours written examination. For extraordinary examinations, written examination may be changed to oral examination.

Compulsory assignments

  • Approved laboratory course
  • Approved exercises
