About

About the course

Course content

By a combination of lectures, tutorials and individual semester works, the principles of UV/VIS-;IR-;1H-, 13C-, and 2D-NMR; and mass spectrometry are expanded upon. The course is especially concentrated on analysing spectral data of organic compounds. Voluntary tutorials. Compulsory semester work.

Learning outcome

Structure elucidation of organic molecules depends on spectroscopy. The students will learn how to elucidate the structure of organic molecules by combination of different spectroscopic methods. These methods are also increasingly applied for the study of reaction mechanisms and for structural studies of biologically important molecules.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures (4 hours per week), voluntary theoretical tutorials (2 hours per week). Compulsory semester work: Structure elucidation of an unknown compound by the spectroscopic methods (practical exercises ca. 20 hours). Report. Lectures and exercises are given in English. The examination paper will only be given in English, and the answers have to be given in English as well. For extraordinary and re-sit examinations, written examination may be changed to oral examination.
