Course content

The student will gain practice in methodical and systematic work on a problem within chemistry education through in-depth studies and independent research work. The thesis should be based on a scientific investigation of a problem relevant to teaching and learning chemistry and natural sciences in school, or communicating chemistry and natural sciences in other contexts. Historical studies on chemistry may be included. Through individual supervision, the student will receive technical, methodical and text-critical feedback during the course of the thesis. The supervision also involves control of the data collection and processing and general research ethics. The department has prepared special guidelines for the master's thesis. The work on the thesis shall equate to one semester's full time work commitment.

Learning outcome

The student

  • is able to work methodogically and systematically on a problem in chemistry education
  • is able to plan and complete an independent research project in accordance with scientific principles and research ethics
  • is able to discuss and communicate knowledge about his or her own field of research with specialists and others

Learning methods and activities

Seminars, individual work, individual supervision. The student must sign an agreement with the department concerning the master's thesis. The agreement confirms that the thesis' subject is approved by the department, and that the student is familiar with and accepts the terms for completion of the thesis.

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Natural Science with Teacher Education, years 8 - 13 (MLREAL)

Required previous knowledge

The first four years of the five-year programme Natural Sciences with Teacher Education, including all practical training, must be successfully completed. The requirement must be fulfilled to be admitted to the course.
