About

About the course

Course content

The student can together with a supervisor put together a list of literature for an independent study of a topic within the theme of the Master thesis, and where the topic is not covered by ordinary courses within the study program. The reading list of the course will normally be selected in such a way that it thematically supports the work on the Master thesis, primary focusing on methodical issues, and therefore this course will usually not be chosen as a first-semester course. If the work is used to support the Master thesis, the subject chosen must have an extended or different aim than what the thesis normally has room for. The term paper is supposed to be an independent work, and it should be about 10 pages long (12 points Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing). The topic and the reading list must be approved by the department (for deadlines, see below).

Learning outcome

An extended understanding and knowledge within a subject that is a smaller part of the Master thesis, preferably related to methodical challenges.

Learning methods and activities

Teaching methods and activities: Individual study. The supervison is limited to give advice in the selection of literature relevant for the topic. Compulsory activities: Approval of topic and individually selected reading list. The application for approval of topic and supervisor must be handed in by 15th September for the Autumn term and by 20th January for the Spring term. The term paper must be handed in by 1st December (Autumn term) and 15th May (Spring term). Oral presentation/examination is used to adjust the grade of the thesis.

Required previous knowledge

Enrolment in the Master Program of Clinical Health Science or the Master Program of Health Science.

Course materials

The student chooses a topic and puts together a reading list of 400-500 pages, somewhat less if a significant portion of the reading list consists of research articles (minimum 20 articles with no less than 180 pages totally if the entire reading list consists of scientific articles). The reading list must ensure an in-depth and extended knowledge of the subject matter.
