About the course

Course content

This course consists of an analytical component where the goal is to broaden the understanding of different rethorical and strategic criteria that is used in criticism. This will be accomplished by examining examples from different forms of literary and other areas of art criticism. The course also has a practical component where writing and criticism of your own and other student's text is central.

Learning outcome

The students shall obtain teorethical and practical insight into varied critical genres and communication forms, and thereby be prepared to actively participate in the contemporary cultural debate.

Learning methods and activities

Seminar and smaller response groups. The practical work will largely take place in the response groups. Obligatory activities: approved reading list and approved portfolio consisting of three texts (literary or other art criticism, 1-2 pages each). Exam: take home exam, 14 days. The student answers one out of two essay questions (at least one will be of a response analytical nature). Scope: 12-15 pages.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Kunstkritikk og kulturformidling (MKUNKUL)

Required previous knowledge

The course requires admission to the Master's programme in Art Criticism and Cultural Dissemination. Successful applicants to the programme must hold a BA with a specialization within at least one of the programme's subject areas.
