About the course
Course content
The course comprises Christianity in the first Century AD. It provides an introduction to Ancient Christian history and texts. Knowledge of the Jewish and Hellenistic background of Ancient Christianity is central.
Learning outcome
The course will have the following learning outcomes after successful completion of the course:
The students should be familiar with important events and persons as well as important theological ideas of Ancient Christianity.
Central aspects of the Greek-Roman society is emphasised, as well as Judaism as background of understanding Ancient Christianity and Ancient Christian Texts.
Students should have knowledge of the content of selected texts from The New Testament, as well as have an understanding of the texts within a wider historical framework. The selected texts are presented in the reading list.
Students ought to be acquainted with methodological problems that occur in the process of working with source materials. In addition, students are expected to develop skills in working with theological thoughts and notions that are prestented and dealt with in the selected texts, with support from a Bible dictionary and other scholarly support materials.
We refer to the descriptions of the criteria in the grading scale in relation to Christianity Studies, which state the criteria of assessment. Please consult the departmental webpages in this respect.
Learning methods and activities
The instruction consists of lectures and/or seminars.
In order to take the exam a written assignment must be submitted (2000-2500 words). The exam consists of a written assignment (3000-4000 words). Information on time frames is provided at the start of the semester.

Recommended previous knowledge
Skills equivalent to one-year of studies of Christian Studies.
