About the course
Course content
The aim of the course is to introduce gender research and to examine how gender is made of relevance and significance within different fields of society. Gender is central for human cultural orientation but at the same time gender relations are rapidly changing. Still, the question remains: sex or gender, nature or culture? We relate today to diverse ideas of femininity and masculinity. Ideally, there is a broad spectre of opportunities within the framework of living as a man or a woman, and this broad spectre even includes ambivalence in relation to the two basic categories (queer studies). The course will examine changes in contemporary society related to Norwegian and international gender research. Various themes will be discussed, such as masculinity, sexuality, pornography, gender equality, identity, parentship and partnership, migration, ethnicity and globalization.
Learning outcome
The aim is to give the students an understanding of the significance of gender in relation to a broad spectre of topical societal matters.
Learning methods and activities
There will be given lectures, and students are expected to participate in other classroom activities like, oral presentations and discussions.
