Gender: Gender and Norwegian Culture, Paradoxes of Equality II
About
About the course
Course content
This course offers in depth cultural analyses of issues concerning gender and equality in Norwegian society. The main focus is on everyday life enactments and cultural constructions of gender. Some questions addressed in the lectures are: How is gender understood in various contexts in Norway? What is culturally regarded as the important similarities and differences between women and men, between Norwegians and others? Equality is a core concept and an important value in Norway, a value that is emphasized both in politics and in everyday cultural life. Throughout this course we will investigate this passion for equality as a trait of Norwegian culture and politics, and we will also discuss and question the actual concept of equality and its challenges. These challenges appear both at the intersections with a globalised world, and within a multicultural Norway. The course is interdisciplinary and will cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to: gender and parenthood, gender in literature, gender and ethnicity, gendering of homes, and gender and sexuality. The course is intended for both international exchange students and Norwegian students. The lectures are in English.
