About the course

Course content

This course aims at providing students with a theoretical basis for analyzing and understanding socio-cultural processes of change. It offers an introduction to recent cultural understanding and societal theory in various disciplines. Students will be trained to recognize these various theoretical approaches and to apply them in their own work. Semiotics, discourse analysis, and the social and textual changes in social science theory will be dealt with, as will structuralism, post-structuralism, and post-modernism. The main focus will be on the various understandings of "the Modern", with particular emphasis on the role played by knowledge in processes of change. As such, the course provides a firm basis for the further study of culture, such as studies of technological change and changes in gender relations.
