Course content
The course offers an introduction to the study of science and technology, with an emphasis on historical and social scientific conceptions of knowledge about science and knowledge. Students will be made familiar with cultural-scientific analyses of modern science and technology and the interplay with social, political, economical, and cultural processes of change. The course will also provide an understanding of central forms of scientific criticism and of more practical approaches to the challenges of democracy and government raised by modern science and technology, such as technology assessment, research politics, and knowledge management.
The course replaces the former KULT3313, Science and Knowledge Cultures.
Learning outcome
The course aims at familiarizing students with cultural-scientific analyses of modern science and technology and their interplay with social, political, economical, and cultural processes of change.
Learning methods and activities
Assessment is based on a portfolio of written work: two assignments, each 2-3 pages long, as well as a larger work of 13-15 to be submitted at the end of term. The first two assignments must be passed in order for the longer essay to be accepted. Collective assessment. Letter grade.
Compulsory assignments
- Two written excercises (3-4 pages each)
Recommended previous knowledge
Bachelor's degree within the humanities or social sciences.
