About the course

Course content

The theoretical perspectives from KULT3305 Cultural and Gender Studies I are taken further in this course, however, here with a particular attention to approaches that are most relevant for the master student in his or her own empirical work.

Cultural analysis involves exploring how gender symbols contribute to the production of culture and to cultural change. It also means the examination of how concepts of gender stand in relation to other cultural features. How does gender affect our way of understanding other cultural phenomena?

The course will present central studies that illustrate the significance of gender in culture and society today and in the recent past. It will deal with issues such as processes of minortizing and majoritizing (processes of etnification; gender equality; body and sexuality; reproduction and parenthood. The research perspectives of various analytical disciplines will be applied. Emphasis will be on practicing how to extract various meanings of gender from different types of text, by the help of methods such as discourse analysis and symbol analysis. The work in this course of study is closely affiliated to the work on the master thesis.
