About the course
Course content
This course is an introduction to the different literary genres of the Middle Ages, as well as an introduction to the use of Latin as a means of communication and cultural transfer in this period.
Learning outcome
Students should acquire skill in translating medieval Latin texts, and an increased knowledge of Latin grammar and vocabulary (as compared to LAT1101), along with an understanding of the role of Latin in the Middle Ages.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and seminars The seminars are compulsory, and the students must have a minimum of 80 % presence and been active in the translation work in order to pass. A small (5-8 pages) written paper on an aspect of the role of Latin in medieval or later times.

Course materials
Ca. 50 pages of medieval prose and poetry (1 page = 30 lines). Epigraphic and heraldic material may be included (not more than 5 pages).
