About the course
Course content
Topics that will be treated are groups, subgroups, normal subgroups, factor groups, group homomorphisms, the fundamental theorem for finitely generated abelian groups, group action on sets, combinatorial counting results, Sylow theorems, rings and fields. Most of the course is taught together with TMA4150 Algebra and Number theory.
Learning outcome
This course aims at making the students familiar with basic algebraic concepts, ideas and methods in algebra.
Learning methods and activities
A written final examination which counts 100% towards the final grade.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course is based on MA1201 Linear algebra and geometry and MA2101 Linear algebra with applications. It is also an advantage to be familiar with the material in MA1301 Number theory.
