Course content

Axiomatic foundation of Euclidean and hyperbolic geometries and models of these. Geometric constructions and transformations, with possibility of using dynamic geometry in a computer lab. The connection with high school geometry and the historical development are covered to some extent. Other geometrical topics may also be included.

Learning outcome

1. Knowledge. The student has a basic understanding of the axiomatic geometry, logical concepts and proof structures. The student is familiar with central theorems of neutral, Euclidean and hyperbolic geometry as well as the historical development of axiomatic geometry. The student has an insight into geometric transformations

2. Skills. The student is able to solve problems from elementary Euclidean and hyperbolic geometry, use models for axiomatic geometry and explain them to others. The student is able to justify geometric constructions made with straightedge and compass and to implement them using geometric computer programs.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, compulsory exercises and work in datalab. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade awarded in the course. This portfolio comprises exercises (20 %) and a written final examination (80 %). Retake of examination may be given as an oral examination.
