Course content
The course gives an introduction to Galois theory and related topics.
Learning outcome
1. Knowledge. The student masters various types of field extensions, for example normal extensions, and has a good understanding of the interplay between group theory and field theory. In particular, the student understands how Galois theory is applied to the question of solvability of the quintic.
2. Skills. The student is able to describe the Galois group of a given field extension, and to find correspondences between subgroups and intermediate fields.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures. The lectures will be given in English if they are attended by students from the Master's Programme in Mathematics for International students. If the course is taught in English, the exam will be given only in English. Retake of examination may be given as an oral examination.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course is based on MA2201 Algebra, or TMA4150 Algebra and number theory or equivalent.
Course materials
Will be announced at the start of the course.
