About

About the course

Course content

Master Thesis in mathematics is usually done in one of the three main fields: algebra, analysis, and geometry. As a rule the work on the Thesis is divided between two terms, namely the third and the forth terms of the Master program. Students should plan the choice of the course at the beginning of the study. The selected courses should be relevant for the field of specialisation in a best possible way and at the same time meet the breadth requirements.

Learning outcome

Work on the Thesis is the core of the master program. The Master Thesis should be an independent scientific work (that could be a kind of survey) where the student shows understanding of the current research and/or relevant theories and methods that are important with respect to the topic of the Thesis.

Learning methods and activities

Study of current scientific articles and books under the supervision of a faculty member. Results obtained when working on the Thesis could be also presented in a seminar.

When the thesis is sent in and approved, the candidate will meet for a finite oral examination (cf. § 23 in "Utfyllende regler til studieforskriften for studier i realfag"). During this examination the candidate gives an oral public presentation of the thesis for about 30 minutes. After the presentation, the thesis will ble evaluated and a grade will be determined.

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required:
