About the course

Course content

The subject is part of the teacher education (PPU). The subject aims to give grounds for the students to teach in Music schools, voluntary music ensembles and in primary and secondary school. Our students becomes instrumental-and vocal teachers on all levels from beginner level to higher education level.
The subjects contains of the following themes:
The Music in the educational system.
Cognitive thinking about pedagogy in music.
Didactic relational thinking.
Methods of vocal and instrumental instruction.
Methods of aural training development and improvisation.
Instructional material and repertoire from a beginner to an advanced level.
The role of the leader and methods of leading an ensemble.
Academic arts and the concept of knowledge.
Project and interdisciplinary work.
Philosophy of music.
Course in band instruments.
The course is, together with 30 credits pedagogics and 150 hours of teaching practice, a part of the Teacher education (PPU).

Learning outcome

This study unit will equip students to plan, realize, and defend instrumental/vocal pedagogy as adapted to an individual pupil and a group of pupils. The student must also develop a view of the tasks and responsibilities of a music instructor in a larger cultural and social context.

Learning methods and activities

For students that take the course in 4 semesters: 4 lessons a week. For the students that take the one year course: 8 lessons a week. Problem-based learning, lectures, group work, seminars, observation of instruction and collection of documentation from field training. The course covers one or two consecutive years.

Assessment: The portfolio consists of three documents. One document from part 1 of the study and one document from the second part, both 7-10 pages. Additionally the portfolio consists a FoU-document (10 pages).

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Musikk, utøvende (BMUSP)

Required previous knowledge

Requires that the student has passed first and second year of the Bachelor's programme in Music Performance Studies.
