About the course
Course content
The course includes analysis and stylistic imitation of functional forms of harmony.
Basic chord progressions and principles of using the voice. Two to four-part movement with an emphasis on choral harmonizing. Analysis of vocal and instrumental music, including examples from the repertoire of the students' principal instrument. The study of harmonics is also connected to interpretation.
Compulsory course in Basic Music Technology A:
The course provides a basic introduction to the use of MIDI, sequencing, and note editing as tools for arranging/composing and aural training.
Learning outcome
The course will give the student a greater understanding of the principles and consequences of functional harmony, with practical interpretation through the students principal instrument.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures in class 1 hour a week for 27 weeks, and in groups 1 hour a week for 27 weeks and assessments.
Basic Music Technology A:
Instruction: 2 hours a week for 8 weeks, in groups.
Assessment: Pass/fail based on written assignments and participation in compulsory instruction.
