About the course

Course content

Three courses that focus on 3 different periodes in the history of jazz. Each course has 16 lessons.
1) Ca. 1920-1960: New Orleans, Chicago, Swing, Big band, Bebop, Cool.
2) 1960-1980: Modal, Free jazz, Jazzrock/fusion, ECM, continuation of earlier styles.
3) 1980-today: Digitalisation of music and music production, advancement of earlier styles, World music, other.

Learning outcome

Attain basic knowledge of the history of jazz from ca. 1920 till today, with emphasis on a musical, analytical and concept clarifying approach.

Learning methods and activities

Group instruction for 48 lessons, distributed on three courses, 16 lessons each (see "Academic content"). Each course ends with a course assignment and a test of the students ability for musical analysis.
Each of the three course assignments must be passed in order to pass the course The History of Jazz.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Utøvende musikk (BMUSK)

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the Bachelor's programme in Music Performance Studies.
