About the course

Course content

The course is based on Theory Jazz A and consists of an introduction to non-functional harmony and modal systems, work analysis, improvisational theory and technique, and analyses of improvisation and compositions in addition to composing and arranging. The subject is closely connected to the subject of aural training, and will to a great extent serve as a systematic way of making the student aware of the material and the processes at work in aural training. An emphasis is put upon the student’s command of aural and musical aspects of the course.

Learning outcome

The course will provide students with an understanding of jazz theory and its application to aural training, improvisation and composing/arranging.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures - 1.5 lessons a week per class for 27 weeks.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Utøvende musikk (BMUSK)

Required previous knowledge

Requires passed MUSP4316 or equivalent course.
