About the course

Course content

The course is based on Theory Jazz B and consists of in-depth studies of diverse topics related to music theory and aesthetics, theories of improvisation, the psychology of learning and acting and their application to improvisation and composing/arranging. The subject is closely connected to the subject of aural training, and will to a great extent serve as a systematic way of making the student aware of the material and the processes at work in aural training.

Learning outcome

The course will provide students with an understanding of jazz theory and its application to aural training, improvisation and composing/arranging. It shall also train the student to reflect upon artistic and other issues connected to the trade of professional music performance.

Learning methods and activities

Instruction: Lectures, student presentations and discussions (seminar) – 1.5 lessons a week per class for 27 weeks.
Assessment: Pass/fail based on participation in instruction, exercises and presentations.

Required previous knowledge

Requires passed MUSP4326 or equivalent course.
