Music in the Media Age
About
About the course
Course content
This course presents a media perspective through a tripartite focus on art music, pop music and film music. The central perspective is based on music history, but a focus is also placed on a close study of selected music examples and discussions on aesthetic positions. The diversity of musical genres and methodological perspectives is reflected both in lectures and a broadly comprised syllabus.
Learning outcome
The objective of the course is to provide an introduction to music from late 19th century up to the present. The main perspective focuses on the apprehension that the growth of media, its diversity and dissemination is a major contributor to the development of music during this period. The course will provide knowledge about the directions of development of music history, music genres, compositional strategies, areas of musical use and aesthetic positions. As well as gaining knowledge within the history of music, it is also a goal to develop the student's discussion and critical evaluation skills.
