About the course

Course content

Through studies of relevant literature and examples, the course provides an introduction to central characteristics regarding the musical development in western culture. Within the historical perspective, emphasis is placed on the music's position in a social and cultural context. In addition to the reading list, a compulsory syllabus of musical work, excerpts and examples are included.

Learning outcome

The objective of the course is to provide an introduction to central characteristics in the music history of western culture, from ca the year 1800 till present day.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and compulsory attendance to seminars.
Assessment: The student will write 3 essays during the semester. Each of these essays should have a max. length of 5 pages (typed). By the end of the semester, two of the three essays are handed in as a portfolio and are evaluated with a letter grade.

Requires admission to the Bachelor's programme in Musicology.
