Course content
The course provides a historical and systematic introduction to music from the great civilizations through a selection of oral traditions from different regions and continents. The course provides an introduction to music as a universal and cultural conditioned statement in todays global media culture. This is done through presenting and discussing a selection of musical examples from different continents. With a starting point in an ethnomusicological position an academic knowledge base and an analytical terminology for the music is built, as a foundation for a relevant understanding of global and local music of today.
Learning outcome
The main objective is for students to acquire a bird's-eye view of world music traditions, and to give an introduction to World Music. It is also a goal to train the students in analytical approaches, targeted at both written and aural music, and through this build a basis for critical reflection towards music and society.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, listening activities and texts. Ensemble seminar (World Music Ensemble). The Semester assignment should have a length of around 10 pages (typed, 1,5/12). The assignment must be delivered mid semester.
The text for the home examination should have a maximum length of 10 pages (typed, 1,5/12).
