About the course

Course content

The course provides an introduction to the four-part choral movement, based on the choral harmonisation of J. S. Bach and other movements. There is a focus on a stylistic understanding, voice leading and an insight into functional-harmonic correlations. The student are given exercises on a weekly basis in the harmonisation of simple passages of melody, and the analysis of the quadraphonic choral movement. Thees exercises constitute the portfolio.

The course in Basic Music Technology provides a brief introduction to the use of MIDI, sequencing, and note editing as tools for arranging/composing and aural training.

Learning outcome

The main objective of the course is to provide the student with a fundamental introduction to functional harmonics, based on the quadraphonic choral movement.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and group instruction. Compulsory instruction.

Basic Music Technology A:
Instruction: 2 h. pr. week for 6 weeks, in exercise groups.
Assessment: Approved/not approved based on written assignments and attendance in compulsory instruction.

Assessment: Portfolio containing up to 8 assignments. The assignments will be assessed with a pass/fail grade.

Compulsory assignments

  • Satisfactory participation in compulsory instruction
  • Passed Basic Music Technology A
  • Exercises in aural training, tonal harmony and harmonic analysis

Required previous knowledge

Admission to the Bachelor's programme in Musicology.
