About the course

Course content

The course involves a basic introduction to composition, the use of MIDI technology and studio work.

Learning outcome

The course will provide students with a basic introduction to arrangement and composition for smaller ensembles. This will enable the students to do simple exercises in arrangement and composition. The goal is to master traditional techniques of arrangement and basic knowledge of instrumentation.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and group instruction. The instruction is compulsory. Compulsory assignments must be submitted during the course, ending with a larger arrangement/composition exercise, which is part of the portfolio.
In this final exercise, the student is allowed to use the tradition and style of the music from her/his background. The final exercise is rehearsed with an ensemble, and recorded on a CD in the studio. The assessment is based on the submitted score and CD.
Assessment: Portfolio containing up to 7 assignments assessed as a whole, with the grade pass/fail.

  • Exercises in tonal harmony and harmonic analysis
  • Satisfactory participation in compulsory instruction

Musikkvitenskap (BMUSV)

Required previous knowledge

Admission to the Bachelor's programme in Musicology. Passed MUSV2009 and MUSV2017.
