Course content
The course combines score studies with individual composition assignments. Principles of composition from the 20th century will be examined, and the implementation of these theories and principles in music from the 20th and 21st centuries will be shown.
The course can be substituted with MUSV3003.
Learning outcome
The objective of the course is to develop the student's musical creativity and understanding of which elements contribute in a process of music formation. Students develop their ability to create individually, and become capable of observing the formative elements and musical structures of composers from 20th and 21st centuries.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and written assignments.
The student will write one composition assignment every week. The principles of composition discussed in the lectures will be put into practice in these assignments. The assignments will be assessed by a tutor in full session, where the students will give responses to each other.
Assessment: The instruction is compulsory. Portfolio consisting of up to 5 assignments, assessed as a whole with the grade pass/fail at the end of the course.

Musikkvitenskap (MMUSV)
Required previous knowledge
Admission to the Master's programme in Musicology. Passed MUSV1017 and MUSV2010 or equivalent courses.
