About

About the course

Course content

The Master’s Thesis is the equivalent work load of one full academic year, and should display the student's ability to conduct independent academic work. The topic may be taken from any area within musicology. Particularly skilled students may seek to have a larger compositional or artistic project approved, as a part of an academic thesis. An academic reflection must be tied to the compositional or artistic project. The written part of the thesis will subsequently be reduced in accordance with the extent of the project. All topics for the thesis must be approved by the Department.

Learning outcome

The Master's thesis is an independent academic work, where the student examines a relevant academic area, in a theoretically defensible manner. Through the perspective of contemporary increasingly complex perceptions of music, the work on the thesis may even include innovative forms of analysis, compared to more established research traditions.

Learning methods and activities

Academic supervision and Master's seminar.

The students will write a Master's thesis in Musicology under academic supervision. The required size of the thesis is normally 80-100 pages.

Before starting to work on the Master's thesis, the students attend a Master's seminar (compulsory participation).
The main objective of the seminar is to make the students aware of both functional and good writing and language, as well as inform about current methods for use in Master's theses within Musicology.
Content:
The seminar is an important part of the process leading to a Master's thesis. The students are given both written and oral assignments.
