Course content

Media studies are generally concerned with the content of media. This course, however, focuses on the potential impact of communication technology in other areas than content. The main emphasis is on images and visual media, but other forms of communication technology are included for comparison and contrast. Three related areas are of main interest:
- Iconology, the perception of images and what may be called the history of vision.
- The relationship between visual media and cultural identity.
- Image technologies, with a focus on the cultural role of these technologies.
