About the course
Course content
Media studies are generally concerned with the content of media. This course, however, focuses on the potential impact of communication technology in other areas than content. The main emphasis is on images and visual media, but other forms of communication technology are included for comparison and contrast. Three related areas are of main interest:
- Iconology, the perception of images and what may be called the history of vision.
- The relationship between visual media and cultural identity.
- Image technologies, with a focus on the cultural role of these technologies.
Learning outcome
Students should gain critical insight into central aspects of what is encompassed in the concept "image culture". The students should also gain understanding of central historical and current image technologies and develop the ability to reflect theoretically over the cultural impact of these technologies.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and seminars.
Compulsory assignment:
Students must pass an oral presentation with written documentation before final assessment can be made.
More on assessment:
The method of assessment will be a letter-graded one-week take-home examination, where students will be asked to answer the examination questions in 10-15 pages.
Students are responsible for checking the results of the written assignment on the department's notice board.
Students are required to use Innsida and It's learning actively for updates and information, in addition to other information resources of the course.

MV1000, MV1001.
Required previous knowledge
Requires admission to the Bachelor's programme in Media Studies.
