About the course

Course content

The Master's thesis is usually an extensive written work (80-100 pages) consisting of two semesters' worth of work and demonstrating the candidate's ability to work independently and in a scholarly manner in his or her chosen academic field. In particular cases several shorter works may be approved, assuming they are of the same standard and thematic coherence as an ordinary Master's thesis. Group work may also be approved assuming the candidate's section is clearly defined and corresponds to an ordinary Master's thesis as far as quality and scope is concerned. The topic of the Master's thesis should usually be approved by the end of the first semester of the study and is based on a project description, which also determines the academic tutor assigned to the student.

Learning outcome

An increased insight into important issues concerning the visual media culture as a result of working on an independent, extensive academic product.

Learning methods and activities

Individual tutoring, exercises and tutoring seminars.

Compulsory assignment:
Project description submitted during the first semester.
Presentation of chapter during the third or fourth semester.

More on the form of assessment:
The deadline for submitting the Master's thesis for assessment is 15. november or 15. May. The final assessment of the Master's thesis is adjusted by an oral examination. The oral examination consists of a public presentation of the dissertation lasting approximately 30 minutes and a succeeding discussion of the thesis with the group of sensors.

Required previous knowledge

Bachelor's degree in Media Studies.
