Course content

At the end of this course, students should be able to deal with simple texts from newspapers. Writing skills in both descriptive and narrative genres are further developed, and towards the end of the course students should also be able to write simple persuasive texts. Students must have handed in and gotten approved at least seven written papers by the end of the course; at least one of these must be in a persuasive genre. Level 2 counts for 15 credits (ECTS) in working load, but does not count toward a bachelor degree at NTNU since it is part of the entrance requirements for ordinary studies. The course may nevertheless form a basis in bringing export credits to other educational institutions.

Learning outcome

Students will build upon their basic Norwegian vocabulary and grammatical skills to further expand their knowledge of the language.

Learning methods and activities

6 hours of seminars per week, including language laboratory exercises. The students forfeit their rights to carry on taking the course and to take the exam if they do not attend at least one of the first two lectures (unless written notification has been handed in in advance). The written part of the exam will cover dictation and/or a listening test with a recitation (where the students in their own words give a written account of the contents), grammar/language understanding and free writing (250-300 words). In addition there is a 15 minutes oral exam. Dictionaries are not allowed. Separate grades are given for the written and the oral exam. In the combined grade the written exam counts 2/3 while the oral exam counts 1/3. Both the written and the oral exam need to be passed in order to pass the exam. Both exam parts need to be retaken in a fail situation.

Compulsory assignments

• 7 approved written submissions with supervision
• 80% attendance (obligatory attendance one of the first two lectures)
