About

About the course

Course content

NORD1102 includes grammar, pragmatics and spoken language.

Grammar:
The purpose of the study of grammaris that the students will acquire better theoretical and analytical competence concerning the language system in modern Norwegian, and understand the language as a part of our common mental and cognitive abilities. This component covers an overview of morphological and syntactical structures and phenomena existing in Norwegian, together with an introduction to syntactical theory and analysis, with emphasis on the improvement of practical syntactic analysis.

Pragmatics:
The purpose of the study of pragmatics is to give students improved competence both concerning the comprehension of the theoretical principles concerning the use of language in context, and the ability to analyse texts. This component includes a practical orientation since one of the goals is to improve writing skills, including spelling and choice of words to improve essay coherence and structure. Composition includes, therefore, normative morphology.

Spoken language (dialectology and sociolinguistics):
The purpose is to give students insight in the social and geographical variation in Norwegian spoken language and a deeper understanding of the forces that govern the development of spoken language. This component includes an overview of central problems in sociolinguistics, and it contains a study of samples of dialects.

Learning outcome

At the completion of the course, students should be able to provide a well-founded analysis of complex sentences in Norwegian. In addition, students should substantiate satisfactory knowledge of the theoretical principles of language use in context and demonstrate an ability to compose good written texts. Furthermore, the student must display solid knowledge of central sociolinguistic approaches to problems, and in that context give substantial comments on dialect samples in Norwegian.
