Course - Theory, Genre and Rhetoric - NORD1104
Theory, Genre and Rhetoric
About
About the course
Course content
The aim of this course is to provide students with practical experience in using theoretical-methodological subjects in analyse single texts. Furthermore, students should be able to discuss different types of texts. Students should also learn to reflect on the premises for and meaning of the analytical work. In addition, students will be given insight in how changing methods and interests can influence the appreciation of literature.
Learning outcome
The goal of the course is to give the students a basic understanding of the process of working scientifically with literary texts. The course will provide a theoretical-methodological approach to texts within different genres and from different periods.
Learning methods and activities
Teaching: Lectures and group work including writing an obligatory assignment. There will be supervision during the course of the semester. There will also be an individual course in Swedish (if the department's economic resources allows it).
All of the curriculum will not be covered during the lectures, and students' individual work will make up the main body of the study. Student activities (group work, oral presentations and participation in discussions) are central. Working together in study groups is a good supplement to both teaching and study, and the students are encouraged to participate in study groups arranged by the department (here, training in academic writing and writing practice will be discussed, as well as discussions of the theoretical concepts), and constitute their own study groups.
Course requirementes: Approved reading list and one approved written assignment. The paper must have a length of maximum 5 pages. There will be oral/written response (approved/not approved) of the paper.
Evaluation:
Students will answer one out of two questions in crafting their term paper. The paper has to be 12-15 pages.
The students must write one of the written assignments on the literature courses on the basic level (i.e. NORD1104 and NORD1108) in "nynorsk" and one in "bokmål".
The students must write two of the four exams on the basic level (NORD1102, NORD 1104, NORD1106 and NORD1108) in "nynorsk" and two in "bokmål".
