About

About the course

Course content

This course has two alternative designs; one syntactical and one intonological. The syntactical variant shall give the student solid competence in analysis of language structure and insight into aspects of language aquisition (first- and second language aquisition). The student will learn to analyze structural differences and likenesses between languages. This will be done by an introduction to the generative framework of principles and parameters, where the main emphasis will be on syntactical analysis. The intonologial variant of the course will give the student an introduction to the analysis of the structure of intonology, and the dymamics between syntacs and intonation. It will also give the student insight in how the intonation of sentences affects their semantical and pragmatical interpretation. This will be done mainly through an introduction to the so called Trondheim model of intonological analysis. The students shall also learn to use the intonological analysis concepts and analytical tools on questions related to language aquisition.

Learning outcome

By the end of the course, the students shall have gained mastery of the most central concepts and analytical tools in the theories they aquire, and shall, by using these, be able to give insightful analyses of central phenomena in Norwegian language structure. The candidates shall be able to use the theoretical tools in a creative and independent manner.
