Course content

The course will cover literary representations of cultural encounter(s) and cultural identity. The course will more specifically discuss two thematic topoi in Norwegian literature: first, we will investigate definitions of "Norwegian" in central texts from 1800 to 1870. Second, we will discuss a selection of fiction from older times and the present that thematizes cultural encounters , as well as migration and identity and multicultiral societies. We will mainly focus on text written in the Scandinavian languages, but relevant works from other languages may also be used. In addition to the fiction curriculum will consist of relevant literary- and cultural theory, for example on post colonialism, modernity and identity.

Learning outcome

The student will obtain insight in how literature can represent - and influence - cultural identity- and integration processes. The student should also gain mastery of literary theory and culture theory and method in the analysis of texts, especially theories that contextualizes topics connected to culture and society. Further, through analysis of literary texts, the students shall gain insight in the relations between individual and society in two- and multi-cultural contexts and in a world characterized by migration and globalization.
