About the course
Course content
The course provides an introduction into the relationship between society, socialization and training. The goal is to stimulate a critical analysis about this relationship and how the school and education can contribute to the construction of society. Different theoretical perspectives on what characterizes development of society in our time will be discussed as well as the question of which challenges societal changes and cultural trends means in connection with pedagogy. Examples of topics to be discussed are how institutions relate to different social groups, multicultural challenges, how gender identity changes, how the participation of children and youth in society can be strengthened, the relationship between education and different sources of influence and the potential common values in social change.
Learning outcome
Develop theoretical understanding of relationships between characteristics in the social structure and socialization/education.
Learning methods and activities
Teaching method and activities: 2 hours of lectures per week, 1 hour seminar per week.
Compulsory activity: Approved research question for the report.
Form of assessment: Report (maximum 10 pages).
If less than 10 students sign up for the course it may be canceled.
