About the course

Course content

The aim of the course is to provide students with a basic introduction to statistical concepts, notations, methods and argumentation in order to enable them to 1) read and understand qualitative research literature, 2) gain a foundation to acquire understanding of more advanced statistical methods and 3) choose and employ relevant methods of analysis on their own data.

Learning outcome

The aim of the course is to provide students with an introduction to basic statistical concepts, notations, methods and argumentation.

Learning methods and activities

Teaching method and activities: Lectures, seminars and tasks, including tasks involving the use of SPSS. Lectures 2 hours per week and seminars 2 hours per week. A 5-day-long obligatory introductory course will be held at the beginning of the semester.
Compulsory activity: Approved participation in obligatory introductory course and SPSS course. The students also have to hand in a written task which is to be approved before they can sit the final exam.
Form of assessment: 4-hour individual written exam.

Required previous knowledge

Either Bachelor Degree majoring in Education Studies (82,5 Credits) which includes exams in the following courses: PED 1000, PED 1001, PED 1002, PED 1003, PED 1004 (the obligatory courses in the Bachelor Degree), or completed the first three years of teacher training-/pre-school teacher training, or Bachelor Degree including 2 years of teacher training/pre-school teacher training, or Bachelor Degree and 1 year teacher training, or Bachelor Degree majoring in psychology, or equivalent education (for example Social Work, Social Education, Occupational Therapy, Nursing or 3-year Social Education and Child Welfare Work), in addition to 2 years’ relevant work experience.
