About the course

Course content

The aim in this course is to promote knowledge about and give competence in basic counselling skills, and see them in connection with theoretical perspectives. In addition, the students shall acquire basic knowledge about career theories and how through counselling one can develop decision making skills in connection to future planning. The course also deals with the training and development of attending and influencing skills. This implies, among other things, training in interview methods and analysis of practical situations and reflections on one’s own experiences in light of counselling theories. Further, the aim is to develop knowledge about holistic career counselling that implies insight into different career counselling perspectives which promote decision making competence in the individual. Another theme that will be emphasized is the use of career counselling tools. The career counselling part of the course also focuses on knowledge about working methods in professional career services. The course involves video based exercises.

Learning outcome

The goal of the course is to promote knowledge about, and give action and communication competence in, basic counselling skills, as well as see them in connection with theoretical perspectives. In addition the student will acquire knowledge about basic career counselling theories and how one can use counselling to develop decision making competence in relation to future planning.

Learning methods and activities

6 hours per week for 2 weeks, 4 days practical-methodical-communication training (6 hours per day) and ca. 10 hours video based counselling interviews.
Compulsory activity: Participation in 80 % of the teaching program and in practical-methodical training. Submission of a video-based counselling interview with a written log, and participation in student-led seminar. Grading: pass - fail.
Assessment: Written essay of 6-8 pages (Times New Roman 12, spacing 1,5), on given topic. Grading: A-F.

The course is reserved for students admitted to Master of Science in Counselling ("studierettskrav").

  • Approved submission of a video-based counselling interview
  • Godkjent deltakelse på studentledet seminar
  • 80 % approved attendance in lectures and seminar

Required previous knowledge

Must have the same admission requirements as for the master program in counselling.
