About the course

Course content

The Master Thesis consists of a report based on an independent piece of research that is completed in the last semester of the course. The course is mandatory. The thesis is based on the plans made in the project preparatory seminar in 3rd semester. The work is to result in a report that is ca. 40-50 pages (A4 format, spacing 1.5, Times New Roman) in length. The student will be given supervision by an appointed supervisor. The supervision will ensure that the student receives advice regarding literature, practical advice about the acquisition and treatment of data, and ensuring that the work his is done within ethical research guidelines. The final exam consists of the thesis and an oral exam. The oral exam will be used to adjust the grade on the Master Thesis.

Learning outcome

The student is required to show the ability to complete a piece of research out from a set research question, choose a fruitful theory as a tool for this work, employ an individual method of research and make valid conclusions.

Learning methods and activities

3rd semester: seminars in project preparation, 10 hours. The students are divided into groups of 5-6 where approaches to problems and research strategies for the Master’s Thesis will be discussed. The project description of the Master’s thesis is to be submitted. 4th semester: completion of the Master Thesis. Individual supervision will be offered by the Department according to the Department’s guidelines.
Compulsory activity: 3rd semester: participation in project preparatory seminars, 10 hours. Project description for Master’s Thesis is to be submitted (up to 4 pages, Times New Roman 12, spacing 1,5).
The subject of the project topic must be approved before submission, and the project description must be approved before appointment of a supervisor for the Master’s Thesis work in the 4th semester.
Form of assessment: Submission of Master Thesis and oral exam.

The course is reserved for students admitted to Master of Science in Counselling ("studierettskrav").

Required previous knowledge

Completion of the two first semesters of the Master’s course (60 Credits) is required for participation in obligatory project preparatory seminar in 3rd semester.
