About the course

Course content

The course will provide a complex overview of the relations between modern and post- modern education. The candidates will both receive living introductions to the most central perspectives and arguments of the debate, together with a closer gaze on the suppliers of such ideas and discourses. Among others, characters as H-G. Gadamer, J. Habermas, F. Nietzsche, J-F. Lyotard, J. Derrida, M. Foucault and H. A. Giroux will be introduced. It also will be important (i) to locate such perspectives into a more comprehensive social-philosophical environment and (ii) how it can mark the practical life of educators. Through the course it will be important to catch and to make clear the practical and theoretical tension between the modern and post-modern, and at the same time question how we can understand the educational and psychological practice, given the fact that it partially can be located within what we today call the post-modern society. The course will also try to locate educational counselling into such a sphere of tension.

Learning outcome

The aim of the course is to make candidates familiar with central themes in Social Sciences and Philosophy of Education in connection with the tension between modern and post-modern education
