About

About the course

Course content

The course provides an overview of the most important theories of the causes of war between particular states, with certain references to theories on civil wars and for the use of violence on a lower scale than war. The most important empirical investigations on war will be presented and data will be made available for individual analysis. Theories on long periods of peace will also be presented.

Learning outcome

The objective of this course is to make the student familiar with theoretical as well as empirical research on causes of internal and international conflicts. A secondary objective is to provide practical training in systematic search for literature and data and in conducting independent empirical study. Datasets are made available for the student’s own analyses.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures/group discussions. Supervision of term paper. The essay is to be an independent discussion of a topic taught in lectures, and is to consist of 20 pages.
